AN 11TH LEADER?

Who am I missing? Ah yes, Sharon Anderson. Anderson, who has run for office virtually every year for 27 years, has blamed the city for evicting her from her home, impounding her car and reducing her to poverty. Her colorful candidates’ debate with St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman four years ago went so far out of bounds that it made news in New York City. She’s easy for some to dismiss. But she’s also important for many to consider.

Back when HealthEast ran a senior center in the downtown St. Paul skyway, my wife and I volunteered to usher and distribute meals at their holiday sing-a-long. When Anderson walked in, she was a rock star — a celebrity among low-income seniors who had few, if any, other places to go for the holidays. “She once ran for president,” a fellow senior told me excitedly, adding that they both got their meals at the Salvation Army service center. Part of me hopes that Anderson — who has spoken openly of her time in state psychiatric facilities — will always be there to remind us that even in the best of times, there are those of us who get left behind.
